More on the VE175 pull-out rack

liquidleaf Jan 25, 2007 12:22 AM

Hey everybody, I've been busy and have been away from the forum for a while....

Finally got around to taking more photos of the pull-out rack. Here's the rack with the wooden cage on top. I put reflectix on the sides of the rack to hold in heat (also taped reflectix on the underside of the tubs, so the heat from Flexwatt gets reflected up into each tub).

I stapled an old curtain over half of the front of the rack. My (hopefully) pregnant female hog island is in there, and she got a bit cranky after breeding and was striking the sides of the tub every time a shadow crossed in front of it, so I figured I'd give her even more privacy. It also helps hold heat in a little more on one side.

The male suriname will eventually go back into one of the tubs (right now he's in with the female in the wooden cage and doesn't seem to want to stop breeding)... Here's a closeup of the snakepile.

I shall eventually post dimensions. I always seem to forget when I go in the snake room.

That'd be great! I think I'd do a few things differently on mine (like put plywood on the sides and completely on the back to hold in heat, and different slides) if I build another one. I do like it so far though. Sorry the photos were at a weird angle - the snake room is small and with all the cages in it now, it's tough to get a wide angle shot.

I don't know if I'm retarded or what, but, I can't see how you access the tubs. How do they pull out? From how it looks, I'm thinking you have to lift them up?

Either you and I are smart, or we are both not so bright, because I came to the same conclusion going by that pic. Maybe you need a screwdriver and take it apart to access each box? Maybe a saw? lol (Just kidding, liquidleaf. But, if you can post a more descriptive pic, that would help.)

She has posted this before, maybe on another forum. I'm certain she used drawer slides and the boxes slide out one of the long ends.

LiquidLeaf,

If you want plywood covering for the sides of the next one, why not just use plywood instead of 2x4's? I would be more stable than 2x4's.

And did you ever get my email response? You emailed me a while back and I replied but never heard anything.

No big deal.

So.. drawer slides working sideways.. You'd have to pull out all of the cages to get into the back cage?

I am pretty sure that there is a 2x4 frame that holds the tubs and the whole frame is on drawer slides. So it is basically like a dresser drawer with a lid.

Heh, yes, this was an update on a thread I started a while ago. Here's some of the old photos, from before I put the other wooden cage on top. Each tub has it's own drawer slides, and slides out independently forward. When pulled out, the lid can then be taken off.

I would use plywood for sides & back instead, didn't think about how to hold in heat until after my husband set it up... ah well, live and learn. We had a lot of extra 2x4s left over from another project and so that's what sparked the design.

Sorry for the confusion. And yep, did get your email, Chris, and it should be on its way shortly.

Awesome. I thought there were 4 tubs, rather than those each being long tubs. Don't know why. Because of that, I couldn't figure out how the sliders worked. Cool deal. How 'bout some more pics of the cage up top? And definitely get dimensions. :-p

liquidleaf Feb 02, 2007 01:01 PM

Will do. The cage up top came with two surinams I adopted, and was built by their previous owner. Unfortunately I had to "modify" the cage before I could fit it in the room so it looks uglier than it did when I got it... but the cage was built out of hollow-core doors and is pretty cool. I'll get more closeups.
