thinking about getting some red-eyes

teaspoon Jan 25, 2007 09:14 AM

I was thinking about getting a few red-eyed tree frogs, either a pair or a trio. I have a 20 gal tank that I would use, is that big enough for three? From what I've researched, some sites say that 4 is the max for a 20 gal, and some say only two, but I could provide alot of hiding spaces if that makes any difference.
I have also kept a cuban tree frog befor, but that's my only experience with tree frogs. Let me know what you think, or if you have any frog-keeping tips or know of any common problems that happen with retfs,it would be appriciated. Thanks.

oh, and one more question, do they need UV light? i've researched this and haven't found a straight answer.

I lied, two questions, are mealworms and small superworms ok for retfs?

Ok, let me give this a try. If you have read that you can place four red eyes in a 20 gallon then someone out there is really pushing their luck as to the health of their animals. I would say one red eye would be good for a 20 gallon. Some people may say two, but I definatly would not put three.

No frogs don't need uv light, but you do need to powder the crickets once a week (more when the frogs are younger)

mealworms and superworms are high in fat and not a good thing to feed regularily. I wouldn't feed them superworms at all. Crickets should be the staple for their diet. A variety of food is always best though, so the occasional mealworms is fine. Also, try butterworms, waxworms and silkworms.

ok, thank-you!
Then I won't get any more than two.no superworms, no UV, got it!
I do plan on doing more research befor I get them, if I get them, I just have to find the perfect time to suggest the idea of frogs to my mom.

I have 2 red eyes, started with 3 one died right away. I have them in a 29 gal and I actually won't even put another one in there. So I would say MAX 2 in that 20 gal.

I would make sure you have lots of plants in there, Pothos is the best, it will also grow really fast, is really cheap and doesn't need UV. Also need a good water dish, temp and humidity gauges (a must).

Use a water conditioner (like Reptisafe)in your misting water and dish. Dust crickets a couple times a week with calcium D3 powder (like Reptical).

The best advice, especially with red eyes, is to have the tank setup weeks in advance to let the plants grow in and also to make sure you can keep up the temps (80-85 day/ 75 nights) and humidity (60% ). If you are able to maintain the required ranges for a week or two then it would be safe to add frogs.

Buy your frogs from a good source that will be captive bred as wild caught ones tend to die pretty quickly and more often that do the CB ones. If you can't find a breeder near you I can recommend one that will overnight them.

3 are fine in a 20 gallon.

I guess it depends on how much stuff you have in your tank. I have a 29 gal tank and with the waterfall, plants, water area etc I wouldn't add another to mine.
