Large enclosure/free roam set up

mattj Aug 10, 2003 01:45 PM

Okay, I'm redoing my basement and want to give my LARGE black throat monitor some room to move. I really don't want to build a seperate room for him to free roam. I'd rather just build a litter damn w/ some type of fencing above to keep him in a section of the room (like 6x10 feet). Any ideas? Temp and humidity are easy for me to control and I like the idea of an open front of some sort. I suspect most mesh/screening would not contain him but wonder if either chainlink (or similar) or wood slats might work. Any have success stories along these lines?

If I had that amount of space to play with, and funds as well, there's SOOO much I would do!!! I think I would avoid chain link...the posibility of him getting stuck, or climbing and falling down... How about this for an idea...
The lower couple feet could be treated wood, to hold in the dirt. Then the top front portion could be primarily glass panels. The sides and back could be wood, with doors on both upper sides to access the inside of the enclosure. You could suspend your lights from the ceiling.
If you know anything about plumbing, I would install/ construct a good sized pond area, complete with a good automatic drainage system, so you can drain and re-fill it easily daily.
That would be awsome to be able to build. If you did something like that(especially with the little pond) I would LOVE to see the results!!!

Good luck, and happy building!
