possible respitory problems

mxer_kx Jan 26, 2007 02:00 AM

hello all i may have a problem but cant quiet figure it out i have 2 of my boas in a 6 ft breeder cage and the female is perfectly fine but as of recently the male has developed something some sort of sound when it breathes that i can only describe as a stuffed nose but what i cant figure out is why i always stays on the cool side of the tank (78 degrees) and never goes on the warm side or near the basking spot(88 degrees) now from what i understand if it was a respitory problem the in sufficent temps would more then likely cause it (right or wrong ?) so why wouldnt the male just stay closer to the basking spot in order to raise its body temp? any suggestions? ...im gonna get it to a vet im just looken to find a reptile vet thats all

I've had them make that noise just before a shed but a vet's not a bad idea.

SUCCESS i think i MIGHT have solved my problem i think due do the recent cold speell here in canada my ambient room tempatures have dropped so i hadded a space heater to warm up my room wich inturn will warm my tanks thus taking a step in the right direction if it is respitory and am i ever glad i did cause that noises seems less and less frequent from even just one night of raised temps but funny you mention the shed because he is due for one anyday now

Don't depend on a space heater to heat your cages. A space heater isn't very good for rooms either unless it has a real thermostat on it. Get more heat on the cage. Put a thermometer on both sides of the cage. 78 at night is too cold for that snake right now. Make his minimum temps (cool side at night) not go below 85 for now. That should be your ambient teemp in the cage for now. Make sure there's a warm side around 88-90 and a basking spot not more than 95. Don't depend opn a rheostat or dimmer switch because you can't be looking at it every second even if you are home all the time. Get a thermostat for your heaters. Take him to the vet for antibiotics too. It's your low or fluctuating temps that made your snake get sick. RIs are very serious in snakes.

Good luck,

oh i know i cant depend on it jus tthe room ther in wasnt getting proper heat (dont you guys hate when that one room in the whole entire house doesnt get proper heat) so i put the space heater in here only temporary untill ther own individual cages are ready and the cages temps are at the very coldest end (behind the water bin) 78 and they go all the way up to88-90 directly under the heat source

and aswell with the space heater i was able to raise the ambient temps in order to help battle and illness aswell as progress report here lol no sounds at all since ive gotten home
