Funny thing about "rare" monitors.

rsg Jan 26, 2007 09:59 AM

A few years back I had a nice trio of caudo's, a pair of storr's and a couple of gilleni. The caudo's and storr's would throw eggs left and right, but no one was interested. I used to feed their eggs to my ackies and posted a pic of my doing so on this forum......no one cared.

The same was true when I bred dumeril's about 6 years ago, everyone was interested until they hatched, then only a few stepped up to the plate to buy (or trade)them for what they were worth.

The absolute worse part of this hobby is trying to sell your offspring.

I had the same problem with Argus, and that's seven, eight years ago now.

Do you still keep caudos or gillens? Because I sure would like to get some. I will pay top dollar for them and their delicious eggs.....hell I will even fork up some cash if you can just show me one person that is selling hatchings right now.

8 years ago, I was a 15 year old kid.....guess I missed out of the privilage of being able to feed caudo eggs to other monitors....oh well...

This is not the past anymore. More people are getting interested in reptiles everyday and alot of people have interest in dwarf monitors.....If some these animals are not available in the US anymore, so be it. I will find them elsewhere...all I have is time.

That's exactly what I was trying to imply, tastes change over time.

I sold off the caudo's to someone in NoCal, gilleni to someone in SoCal, and the storr's went to FR.

Good Luck

I dont have any.
I stopped hatching eggs on purpose because I want to keep my collection smaller. Its funny, I had 2 monitors I couldnt give away, now down to one of those 2 left, but every now and then people are desparate to find them.
I saw hundreds of posts about people who wanted red ackies, I had many who emailed/IMed me to get one, but when it comes down to price, sometimes so very little, they loose interest. They seem interested if you would give them one and pay for the shipping for them, so it makes me wonder what kind of keeper they would be if they are too cheap to pay for even shipping.
I even gave one to a guy who gave me my flavi-argus and asked for nothing in return.
I even have a big dangerous monitor that some people are always looking for, but no one is interested when they find out it acts like a monitor. I had a few change their minds on buying that one more times than some people change their linens in a year, lol.
Just like the rare spider I had a few years ago, had a few offers for very high amounts, but when time came to wheel and deal, they wanted to trade some $1-$2 spiders and scorpions instead of pay for her.
Sometimes it seems worth it to sell at reptile shows, at least the exsposure moves some or most of them, also less people want to unload cheap imported animals in trade sometime face to face.

Who actually Imed or emailed me asking for me to give them the ackie eggs instead of disposing of them, next time. I suppose they want them shipped free also, LOL. I bet they would be great keepers.
