No place to cool snakes down, any ideas?

skyfire_1 Jan 26, 2007 11:05 AM

I just moved into a house and the basement is completly finished and heated. I live in New York and I used to just put my snakes in my unheated basement to cycle them for breeding in the spring. How do people in Florida cycle their snakes since they have warm weather and no basements? Are there any tricks of the trade besides running an air condioner in a room all winter?

If you are working with small species, a wine cooler could be an option. I have seen plans for converting an old refrigerator into a hibernation cooler using a thermostat, but I can't remember where I saw the plans.

shut off the heat to the basement?

i live in a top floor appartment and it has baseboard heaters so i could never get my temps low enough. i ended up buying a large wine cooler at the beginning of the summer and checked my temps all summer long with a standard variance of 7 degrees plus or minus of 55. so far my two black pines have been in it for the last month and a half and and i check on them every five days and they seem to be doing fine. i added a small aquarium pump to the bottom and a few small holes in the top to aid in airflow into the cooler. not to mention the fact that i stress out and just open the cooler every day and fan some fresh air into it without disturbing the snakes i'll let you know how it worked in another month when i pull them out. now that the initial shock of putting my favorite reptiles into a cooler has worn off i think i should have a good breeading season
