No place to cool snakes, any ideas?

skyfire_1 Jan 26, 2007 11:07 AM

I just moved into a house and the basement is completly finished and heated. I live in New York and I used to just put my snakes in my unheated basement to cycle them for breeding in the spring. How do people in Florida cycle their snakes since they have warm weather and no basements? Are there any tricks of the trade besides running an air condioner in a room all winter?

I'm not sure the quantity or size of the snakes you keep! But here in Southern California we use ice chests. We cool, Hoggs, Kings, and Milks sepratly in small rubbermaid boxs. We put blue ice in the ice box and change daily. This will cool the ice box into the low 50s. It is important not to put the ice in direct contact with any of the small boxs housing the snakes. You just want the ice in the icebox with the snakes.
I have used this method for 12 years now and have never had any problems!
If you are worried about the air! put holes in the containers and each day when you open the ice chest, air will re-circulate!

Good luck:
Jason

If you have a spare bedroom, put them in there. Close the heat register for the room and crack the window open about an inch or so.
