Keeping a map turtle with fish??????

Chameleon996 Jan 26, 2007 12:50 PM

how long can I get away with this? I have a map turtle (Turtle McNally) that is just under the 4 inch mark. I do not feed him fish he eats pelleted food, some greens and the occasional cricket. Some one gave me a tank that had a 2 inch cichlid in it so I put the cichlid in with turtle to see what he would do. They coexisted peacefully for several months then I noticed the cichlid being mean to turtle so that was the end of him I took him out. Later I decided that I liked the lok of fish in his tank so I got him some new buddies, he currently resides with 4 german blue rams, 2 cory cats, and 1 chinese algae eater. They have been together for about 4 months and the fish stay out of his way. if i keep him well fed do you forsee a problem?

I have kept fish with turtles for a while but they always seem to end up missing after a while. They seem to leave them alone more if they were raised with them from hatchlings, but still sooner or later they will most likely be eaten...

Currently in the US Navy so I have sold off my collection. But over the years I have had dozens of turtles, fish, geckos, and other lizards. Cant wait to get back in the hobby once im out though!

Yeah, I agree. You're always going to lose some fish keeping them with turtles. A couple of ways to slow down the death or killing of fish is 1)Use the biggest tank you can. More area to cover for a turtle will mean a better chance of a fish escaping. 2) Choose fast fish.
I keep Zebra Danios and White Cloud Mountain Minnows in my turtle tanks. They're very fast, active, and interesting to watch and CHEAP. I think it's a bad idea to keep anything slow like an algae eater or cory cats in with turtles.

I was worried about them also but they seem to be doing fine. Turtle's basking spot is made out of a large pile of lace rock and the cory's and the algae eater tend to stay in all the holes created by the rock. The rams are pretty quick and right now they are bigger than his head. I understand the bigger tank thing it makes alot of sense.
