Tanks..

AndrewFromSoCal Jan 26, 2007 01:02 PM

Well, first of all, can a standard 10g tank be used for quarantine for a few months?

Also, has anyone tried a background in their tank, much like the dart frog people do? That, or multiple levels in cages? My boy tramps around his cage a lot, and I just kind of feel like he doesn't have a lot of room (even though he's in a 20g) Any ideas or suggestions?

That is, of course, if he decides to eat any time soon.

Yup, everything I have read says that your average leo is fine in a 10 gallon. I prefer the 20 longs for permanent housing, but then my "normal" girl grew to 10".

We have solid colored backgrounds, basically construction paper. I don't see anything wrong with picture backings, but I would put it on the outside of the enclosure, obviously.

We recently put up one of those lizard hammocks, she prefers it as a hiding spot not a high level climbing area though. Do you have some rocks or other low things to climb on? Leos really like to climb over their houses, rocks, and plants; he may enjoy that.

I have also noticed that male geckos seem to have a greater sense of territory. Our male would get up every night and take one or more "gecko laps" around the whole terrarium. We would say he was making sure the enclosure was safe from cricket invasions or something like that. Our female occasionally checks out her territory, but not on such a regular basis as our male. So his running around may just be making sure everything is right in his world and nothing more. Good luck.

Here is Mr. Gecko's cage, he is solo in a 20g, he's about 8 1/2 inches long now. Assuming he doesn't die because of his hunger strike [] he might get bigger as he's only a few months old.

The backgrounds I was referring to would be like the ones people do for dart frogs, just with sand instead of woodlandy stuff. This is the background I just completed for the frogs i'm getting.

Granted, it may take some of the background room, and the substrate wouldn't be too removeable (which I just thought of, making a background a not so swell idea), and it would also probably be an escape/climbing hazard, I think it may add more depth to the cage and such. Of course, now that I think about the draw backs, it doesn't sound like a good idea, haha.

The 10g's would be housing two females until quarantine is over, in which time i'd put them together into a 20g cage (when they were properly sexed). I don't want to house them directly with the male, which explains the two seperate cages. When I was done with the 10g's, i'd probably just use them for more frogs.
