Tile Board question

sjtownsend Jan 26, 2007 01:55 PM

Hello all.
Its that time again. Seems my collection of Ball Pythons is growing and I need to make a new rack. I heard a few of you discussing tile board and thats what I would like to use for the top. I went to my local Home Depot and they have a couple different types I can go with.
I was hoping to get some opinions on what would work best. I am going with an eight level (3 wide) "Freedom Breeder" type layout. I will be making the rack out of wood, and use the tile board for the top. The tubs will be CB-70's w/o covers. The Home Depot has 2 types of the tile board and they are:

1) Dark brown peg board (4x8 sheet) w/one side having a white shell like coating. This already has holes in it.

2) A 1/8" solid pvc type tile board (4x8 sheet) with no holes. I would have to drill them which I think may be better for humidity purposes.

I am also concerned about going with the coated peg board due to the humidity eventually weakening and destroying it. It is not coated on the inside of the holes, just the surface.

Has anyone seen the type of tile board I am talking about? If so, do you think it would be good to use?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Tileboard is kept near the paneling section at Home Depot.

You are describing pegboard and dry-erase board, or 1/8" vinyl-coated MDF. Much thinner and less durable surface than tileboard persay.

Still, the pegboard is more durable than you might think, especially with the vinyl-coated side facing into the cage. It helps with ventilation without ventilating too much, and that is why it is often used for cage tops. Plus it doesn't warp with heat.

I've used it as tops for Cambro boxes (the large box size), and had no problems housing adult kings and milks that way. I just kept the boxes on shelves and made lids using pegboard with 3/4 square pine molding around the perimeter held on with liquid nails.

Look at the real "tileboard" and see if that tickles your fancy. The coated surface is quite durable and does provide a true moisture barrier. The back side is just like pegboard material though.

Thanks for the help, but I'm still a little confused. This stuff was in the paneling section at Home Depot. I'm not sure of what I should be looking for. Does tileboard have any holes in it? and also is it solid white the whole way through or is it just on one side?

Thanks,
Steve

Tile board has just a thin white film on one side of 1/8" or 3/16" brown hardboard. I have seen it in the paneling section or by the showerboard section of home improvement centers.

Thanks Chris,
I'm pretty sure I saw that stuff too.
I'll pick some up today and get started.
