Sanzinia Breeding Question

shedthegear Jan 26, 2007 04:31 PM

Hi,

I posted a pic of my Sanzinia mating about a month ago under "Mating Sanzinia".

Anyway, since this is my first year attempting to breed these snakes I have a couple of questions.

All 2.1 snakes are still hanging out with each other quite a lot. I plan to keep night time temps low until mid-late March and then separate the snakes. Is this a good timetable? They've been together since early November.

Secondly, if the female is gravid, what signs should I look for? If I see ovulation and then a POS how long should I expect to wait before she births? Is the gestation period similar to that of Columbian boas?

Thanks for your help.

Sanzinias only require two months of cooling with NTL in the lower 60's or upper 50's F. The sexes are then introduced and the temperature returned to the normal 'summer' settings, with heavy, daily misting of the snakes.
It is not necessary to introduce males to females during the cooling period, only after cooling when the temps have been raised and spraying commenced. The male(s) should remain with the female(s) for an additional two months after introduction when mating usually occurs, and then removed to their own cages.
Substantial darkening of the female almost always occurs when she is gravid and she will invariably refuse to eat until the babies are born.
