QUESTIONS ABOUT MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING!!!!!!!

keith_ecko Aug 10, 2003 02:33 PM

I have heard quite a few good things about it...and was wondering if I can use one atop of my 55 gallon tank or is it too small a area for one of those bulbs??? If I can use one would I use the same wattage to get to a 105 degree basking spot or is it different with those? Using one of those I can do away with my Flueroescents right? Well that's it....Giveme the scoop! THANKS GUYS!!

I personally like the mercury vapor lights. I use the powersun 100 watt for my 40 gal glass tank, and the 160 watt for a 75 gal glass. I have to use the 100 watt in my 4x2x2 melamine enclosure cause there is not a lot of ventilation and the temps get to hot if I use the big 160. For a glass tank you need a little higher wattage cause the whole top is open. When I had a 55 gal I used the 160 watt, and kept the basking spot lower to the ground. You could use the 100 and lift the basking spot up off the ground, really your choice and what works for you. I had great success with these type lights. You will have some that love them and some that think they are not good. I found them to be good cause with the fluorescent they have to be 12 inches or closer to the bulb to get any added benefits of uvb. I still on all the enclosure run cheap home depot fluorescent lights the length of the tank for the bright light they require.

I use 100watt mercury vapor bulbs for my 60 gallon tanks and have a nice gradient. You shouldn't have any trouble with using them in that small of a cage as long as you buy the flood light.

PS: Please do not use all caps for your subject line

Personally I find it a bit annoying, sort of like somebody is shouting while talking to you. It feels as though you are trying to make your post more important than others. It really is not that big of a deal to me, I just felt it was a general consensus on this board that all caps subject lines should be avoided. If other people disagree let me know.

I've heard other people talk about the "ALL" caps thing and personally and don't take this the wrong way but I don't see why it would be a big deal. The letter is like a 1/2 a 1/16th bigger than small text....If I am outta line by typing with all caps I'm sorry, but when I do post a question it is at the utmost importance to me at that time regardless of how stupid a question to some....Never considered some people would take it as yelling either....I personally like all caps better! I don't have young 20/20 eyes anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and as such, it does bother some people, questions on here are answered whether in caps or regular type. But some good answers you might miss if the people do not read since it is in all caps
