Getting them to like veggies?

profilergirl Jan 26, 2007 04:35 PM

I have no idea how old Carson is, really. He's about 9 inches now,and growing like a week. He is still not a cricket fan, but he loves silkworms and phoenix worms. But he will not touch veggies or fruit, period. Every once in a while he'll take some all natural applesauce from my finger. But he won't eat berries of any type, squash, or any greens. I've tried pretty much everything listed, including dandelion which they are supposed to love. Sometimes he will lick water off of them, and nibble at them, but he won't eat them.

I've also tried putting worms in with them to get him to sneak some in, no such luck. Should I not worry about it yet? I've had him about a month, he's grown around 2.5 inches since then.

I wouldnt worry too much

try not feeding him any worms at all for a few days and then offer him some greens, try red bell peppers , the color red seems to simulate thier appitite

as they are juviniels thier diet is about 20% veggies and 80% inscenct and animal protien. as adults the ratio is reversed.

i wouldnt worry too much

good luck

I agree with Nathan23 and wouldn't be all that worried. But, I wouldn't withhold the live food in an attempt to entice him into salads. It's important the he get a lot of protein right now to fuel his rapid growth rate.

You should be feeding him live food twice a day. Dust crickets and silkworms with calcium (no phosphorus, no Vitamin A) every meal and once a week with a multivitamin. I do 1 feeding 1 1/2 hours after lights come on. Then leave salad in all day then 2nd feeding 2 1/2 hours before the lights go out. Some will say put in salad first which is fine if it works with your schedule.

Dragons really like silkworms. After I introduced mine to them they have much less interest in crickets too. One of mine would eat 100 if I'd let her. If I feed her too many she won't eat her salad either. So if you do anything cut back on how many you are giving him rather than skipping live food.

Continue to offer the greens. I'd go with the mild tasting options. Like Collard, Dandelion, escarole, and endive. Turnip and mustard greens have a strong taste and smell more suited to an adult dragons taste. I'd forget about vegitables at this stage. If you can find a fruit he likes that could help. Try raspberries, mango, papaya, apple these are the ones mine really like.

I have to agree with the other 2. Try skipping the insects for a few days and try veggies if not such luck he still seem like a little guy so he will he mpore insects whne younger verses veggies.

Good luck!
