it could be a million and 1 things. have you changed anything in its home? when you got it, did he come with a paper towel or aspen you can put in his home to make him feel at home? how long have you had it? what are you trying to feed him and how often? how do you prepare the food? is it warm when its offered? jus to name a few

...Any chance it's going through a shed cycle? No, it won't starve in two or three weeks. I'm guessing it's been hiding more than usual and does not look quite as bright. Soon to shed. Soon to eat. Hope it's that easy. Duffy

yep, we need info...
tell us as much as you can think of.
size of the enclosure, type of substrate, type of heating and temperatures, descritption of setup such as position of hides and water bowl, type of enclsure lid...screen top, solid top with air holes...whatever
age and size of snake, history of feeding before you got it.
just any and everything you think may help.

I don't know the temp. He has a heater. His living quaters are 2 warm rock and half a hollowed log.

>>I don't know the temp. He has a heater. His living quaters are 2 warm rock and half a hollowed log.

how big is the tank?
what type of heater?
what type of substrate?
warm rock? please tell me you do not mean heat rocks.
Water bowl size?
Screen top?
Size of snake?
Size of prey item?

There are so many factors that could contribute to the problem it would be almost impossible for us to hazard a guess without more information.

I feed him baby mice from the freezer after warming it in hot tap water. I have had him for a little over a week.

wpglaeser Jan 27, 2007 09:30 AM

pinkies? if so, how many did he have his last feeding?

normally, the rule is one appropriate sized mouse every 7-10 days for a juvenile and 10-14 days for an adult. at that age, one or two pinkies per feeding should be plenty.

also, his cage should have a cool hide and a warm hide. it should also have a substrate, like newspaper or aspen shavings. I use cypress (not cedar) mulch with my milk snake and newspaper for my daughter's corn. she likes to hide under the newspaper. hot rocks aren't recommended. they can burn a snake. they are meant for geckos, etc. it's better to have an undertank heater (low wattage) or an overhead light on one side of the tank.

half a coconut makes a great hide. just buy a small coconut at the grocery store, drill/punch a hole to drain the juice, then whack one end (not the middle) with a hammer and it will crack along a seam. then you can pry the halves apart. then dig out the pulp with a spoon. it will be hard and come out in sections. it's ok if you take some of the inner shell with the pulp. when you're done, you should have two clean coconut halves. put one on each side of the tank. it shouldn't be so flat that the snake can't get underneath. if necessary, you can trim some shell off one edge with a knife. it doesn't have to be a "door" shape, just so part is off the cage floor. it also gives them a rough surface to rub against when they want to shed.

did your breeder/pet store give you dates that it ate/shed? did they guarantee it eats well? where did you get him?

I think it is when i brougt him home his mice thaued and we just refroze them. It is a posibility. He is a small fish tank. The heater is from edge to edge. I feed him a pinky at a time so he digests them. It just worries me alot to know that he might starve. I am currently feed him.

(I am 9 yrs. old so please excuse my spelling)

Do you have measurements on the cage? Here is a Website that will give you all of the info you will need to take care of you new snake! Good luck! I also started out at your age!

well, I am glad that you are trying to learn how to care for your snake but I am still a little confused.
Small fish tank..is this a 10 gallon aquarium? ask your parents they should know.
Does the heater you speak of go underneath the tank?
If so, does it cover all of the bottom of the tank?
If it does, it is too large. You don't want it to cover more then half the bottom.
It may be too hot in the tank.
Ok, so he has eaten since you have had him but has now refused food for two weeks...two weeks isn't too long. They can go longer without food.
When it ate before did it digest its food properly or did it regurgitate (throw up) the pinkies?
Has it shed recently?
How large is its water bowl? Can it fit in the water bowl if it wishes to soak?
do you have a screen top, plastic top...what kind of top?
sorry to keep asking these questions but you really need to try to answer each one so we can figure out what the problem may be.
