A new way of feeding my geckos...

eliotm May 21, 2003 12:50 AM

I have a new way of feeding my geckos (for me at least) that I thought you all might like to hear. I leave my porch light on for an hour or so. When a whole bunch of moths have collected around the light, I go out with a beer bottle and put the mouth over a moth and let it fly into the bottle. I do this until I have a whole bunch of them in the bottle, then I just put it in the tank and let the geckos have fun nabbing them as they fly out.

Next step will be putting the bottle in the freezer for a few minutes first. That way I can knock the moths out first and distribute them to my different tanks.

Its great giving geckos a variety in their diet, however I would discourage this for a couple reasons.

1. Wild prey may have had exposure to pestisides and other chemicals that may be harmful and/or lethal to your geckos.

2. Wild prey sometimes have internal parasites that they may then transfer to the geckos after they are ingested.

Its fun seeing them eat moths though, however may I suggest raising waxworms to adulthood? They are excellent, healthy meals for herps.
