Best King for breeding

PimpColubrid Jan 26, 2007 07:00 PM

Im wondering what the best kings for breeding would be. I want something with pretty colors but I also want something that I can start a nice collection with. I realize that when breeding snakes you really never make a profit but I dont want to be to far in debt either. My price range is anywhere from 10-120 dollars a snake. This is just so I have enough money to spare for vet bills, food, heating, etc.Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Patrick C.

"best snake to work with" is only up to you. you can try out a few snakes and keep them until what will catch your eyes. for a good priced kings would porabiily be cal. kings. IMO brooks kings are the prettiest king to me. if your looking for some really nice looking snakes try to look up on some of honduran milksnake morphs. all i can say is you need to look around and keep a few kings until one kind that will catch your eyes. there's so many great looking snakes out there and good luck on snake hunting! here's some of my brooks kings.

Brooksi are also my favorites. They eat well, come in a variety of color/pattern morphs, and are easily handled. Most kings are this way though. You just have to pick something that catches your interests. Whichever species you pick good luck

The male is the Hypo, the female is the normal appearing het that is chowing down on a pink.

If you want a lot of variation - I'd go with Thayeri

1.1 L. getula nigrita
1.0 Boa constrictor constrictor (suriname, fostering/rescue)
2.3 Elgaria multicarinata multicarinata

Of all the snakes I have worked with over the years, I would have to say the Thayeri are the most fun. It’s hard to say one species over an other is my favorite, but Thayeri are fun. None in a clutch will look alike and many are not even close to each other. There is a full spectrum of colors and patterns, they grow fast and breed readily, are less likely than getulus to eat each other, and are smaller so easier (cheaper) to house.

There are some nice larger Kings to work with but I doubt anyone that breeds them can dispute how much fun it is to see what will hatch out in a clutch of Thayeri. Some very nice ones can be found in the price range you mentioned too.

I already own a yearling Thayeri. Its a very pretty snake but I see it more as a pet, not as a breeder. But im definetly gonna look into the Brooksi Kingsnakes.

Thanks for the help,
Patrick C.
