Plains Garter!

reptilicus81 Jan 26, 2007 07:39 PM

This little guy is two years old. He was WC by security in a school I used to work at. It was November and FREEZING outside, and he was the size of an earthworm, so I kept him. He has grown a ton, but is still very small. Is this typical for this species? He eats a pinky mouse once a week. He ate fish and worms for the first year though until I could finally switch him to mice. He has gotten very pretty recently, and his belly has turned quite green!

Nice looking garter you have there.

Doesn't look that small, especially if it really is a male. I'm more familiar with sirtalis, so I can't say much about sexual dimorphism in radix.

Thank you! He is finally calming down a bit after 2 years, and refraining from musking me. He never bites at least. The species size ranges from 15-28 inches, and he is ~12 now, so I am sure he will stick around the 15 range full grown.

Kinda hard to see the tail to tellif it's a male or female....they average around 30" or so....males can be almost as big as females, but usually are smaller.
