im going to get a 30w spot bulb later tell the temp tomorrow!

Yes it is quite normal for them to gape during basking. Just make sure it is not over 115 if it's higher then that it could be dangerous for him. Make sure he has a cool spot to rest. You could just angle a piece of cardboard or something to give him a little spot that is completely shaded. As long as it is under 115 it should be fine.
