Space Heating

ABCC Jan 27, 2007 09:43 PM

I'm looking to purchase a space heater for my snake room. The best reviews seem to point towards oil-filled radiant heaters for overall efficiency, safety, etc. Delonghi seems to be suggested in particular. To what degree do the oil-filled heaters affect humidity and oxygen levels in the room? Some models offer digital controls, any cons? Lastly, does anyone have any particular suggestions for backup thermostats? Most of the heater models max out at 1500 watts. Should the backup be rated for greater than 1500 watts for added safety? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Adam

Regarding the backup thermostat: this is a wise move. Ranco sells an ON/OFF thermostat that is rated for 15 amps. That should be sufficient, but check the ratings again on the heater.

You can get a Ranco thermostat from various sources. One is www.mgreptiles.com.

I looked at those also, but now I am leaning towards the Eden Pure quartz heaters. They are gaurenteed not to catch fire or set objects on fire. They are also a healthy heat(they don't "burn" the air). They are also supposed to be energy efficiant.

I've looked at those more than once. They seem like a great idea. They actually sell similar ones at Wal-Mart now. I saw one about a month ago. Don't remember the specs, but, it was under $100. I'd say it'd be good enough for a single reptile room, compared to those name branders that are meant to heat huge areas. (i think i just found it here: http://www0.epinions.com/content_172534828676 the reviewer mentions buying it at Wal-Mart)
They're supposed to be really safe. I actually talked to a guy who installs furnaces, and he said that if you can afford them, they're great to install as a full furnace in the house, rather than burning oil, gas, or whatever.

I've been going back and forth between the Ranco and a Johnson Controls. As for the Edenpure, I've checked that out as well. I don't know anyone who owns one so I'm a little sceptical. Although the add claims different, quartz, ceramic, etc. are said to heat objects and not the air. They're good to reduce drafts but not so much for raising ambient temps. Thanks for all the info guys. Adam
