I think you may need more help then just your fingers crossed on those eggs. Most of them are infertile and the one or two that look like they may be ok still don’t look to good. But I will keep my fingers crossed for you as well! Good luck and let us know if any of them make it. Also you need to get your male back in with her ASAP so you can get some good eggs in another 29 days or so.

JIM
PS they should look like these.

Jim, and evilelvis, I'm afraid your right. At best I may have three good eggs, but this is her first clucth and I'm going to ride it out w/ them.
Concerning the brownish color of them, I have had brownish eggs from other snakes and have had them come out fine. White is great but brown can work.

When I put her w/ the male she weighed 217 grams.
Just before she dropped her eggs she weighed 269 grams, after she laid, she weighed 205 grams. I'm thinking I'll get her back up to 215,220 then try to breed her then. Any thoughts to this line of thinking. I have never double clutched a snake.
Thanks for posting back.

Jim & evilelvis know a hell of a lot more than me but I think she is going to double clutch & triple clutch & more - all on her own. I would hook her up with the male again and just feed her heavy. The pair I had triple clutched before I sold them to Jim, and she laid a few clutches for him too I think. That sperm retention thing is alive & well and living in tri colored hogs!!
Good luck & keep the pictures coming!@!
And - some advise - don't get tagged by a baby southern copperhead!!

Back in Nov. of 04 I was cleaning out the snakes to cool them for the winter. My female tri color hog laid 9 bad eggs in her hide(she was never with the male - hell, I thought they bred in the spring). I put the male in with her - she laid 9 good eggs in early Jan. I put the male back with her in mid jan, - she laid 9 more good eggs in early march. I put the pair up for sale in early april - Jim bought them and she laid 11 (I think) good eggs about a week after he got them. Talk about the best buy Jim made on that day.
The first baby to hatch - is your female!!! Small world.
Moral of the story - put the male in with her!!!!

the other are right, you will most likely get more eggs every 29 days or so. mine will lay about 8 clutches a year weather I want them to or not. so they may as well be good egg, right? did you see your male breed with her about 30 days ago? or did you just assume he did because she laid eggs? if he did breed her then maybe hes not getting the job done! good luck .

JIM
PS you can see that some of these eggs are good and some are not.

That is about the same situation I experience, 5 clutches per spring/summer, about 10 eggs per clutch. This is a result of one time introduction od a male for about two weeks.

P.S. In response to earlier threads, has anyone had a young (

evilelvis Feb 02, 2007 02:24 AM

Im sorry to hear that, but as everyone else said, you ARE going to get more eggs. If the next lot are not fertile after the male has been in there, i would cool the male for a month then try again.

Im afraid Jim is right, those eggs are no good, incubate them just in case but dont get your hopes up, they should be brilliant white.

Hey Steve, thanks for the photo. Man she was little.
I liked her the first time you posted her up. Glad I was able to get her.

Terryd the point that jim is making is that in 29 days you are going to get another clutch wether you like it or not so take his advice and put the male in with her pronto. Tom
