First time post, have a question

JohnnyBoy Jan 28, 2007 12:08 AM

I've owned my kingsnake for about 3 months now, and I am having a blast. My question, has to do with smells...
I did not know how bad snake poop smells till I got the snake, and for just a small [14.5"] snake his poop smells awful. Normally with the aspen shavings I cannot smell a thing, and thats the way it was until I bought the exo-terra reptile hide, the one with the magnetic side that attaches to the outside of the glass. My snake LOVES this hide and spends 98% of his time curled up inside this thing, I also think it stays warmer, even though on the box it says it stays cooler. The problem with this hide is that there is no absorbency whatsoever. I put aspen shavings into the hide, and I still have to clean it once a week. The poop just accumulates in it and it smells awful. I took my snake out so I could clean the hide, and I notice that my snake smells too! I gave him a quick dunk in some water with a drop of soap, sprayed him with repti shedding aid [didn't want the soap to dry out his skin, if it even can] and he still smells.
Will I need to wait till his next shed before he smells normal again? I'm not going to use the hide anymore, it just smells too bad, seriously...
Theres a big fake plant in the tank that my snake used to hide in all the time, I'm sure he wont miss his hide too much!

Wash the hide with a little bleach and water, rinse well, you might check the substrate to make sure its not wet on the bottom of the tank with a feces mix, Also look for a dead or regurgitated mouse, and if you have one, you'll have to change the bedding to get the smell out.
Good luck!
