Cal King tank size

paul7 Jan 28, 2007 12:54 PM

Hi folks,
I'm about to purchase my first banana Cal King.
What size tank would be ok for the snake?
I used a 20-Long for a corn, but I think the Cal Kings
grow smaller than corns. Would 10gal suffice?
Thanks in advance.

The tank size may depend on how big the snake is right now. Is it a baby, sub adult or adult?
Here is my take if I was still using aquariums:

Baby snake-You could use a 10 gallon but it may not feel secure and the cage may seem too " open ". You could try and see though. I would use a plastic shoebox or a tank half the size for a baby. I think they make 5 gallon sizes?

Yearling to small sub adult-10 gallon

Adult-20 Gallon Long.

When I had aquariums, my adult cal kings were always at least 4 ft long so the 20 gallon long was perfect.

Take care!
Billy

Thanks Billy,

I just bought the banana Cal King and the 20-Long.
Next I have to get him/her sexed. By the shape of tail,
I'd say a female, I'll know for sure when I get her sexed at
Reptile show in Arlington, TX Feb17. He/she's in the blue right now, but still looks nice! Can't wait for the shedding to be completed.
Thanks again.

Oh, one more thing Billy,
I like your Genisis 1:1 at the end of your posting.

Congrats on the purchase!!
That show in Arlington next month should be a good one. My friend Don Shores will have a table, as well as Don Soderberg. I may not be looking for anything in particular, but we shall see!
Thanks on the compliment about my signature!

Paul,
I would say at the smallest a 20 gallon sized tank should be sufficient for a Cal King. I had a really nice desert Cal King who grew quite large, and after several years I found the 20 gallon to be just too small, so I moved him into a 40 gallon breeder tank. He's since passed on, but now I have a juvenile Forida King in the 40 gallon, and that's working out great. Good luck with your snake.

That's a nice shot of your cal king, Jim.
A VERY good size too!!!
I reckon, I'll start with this 20gal, and yes, if it
were to come to that, I'll spring for the 40 later on.
Thanks for your experience.... always wanting to learn
more about these beautiful creatures.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

i keep my baby in a 10 gallon and my yearling in a 29 tall.

i give them lots of cover, and see them out a good deal of the time, they're really only secretive after a meal or when they're in shed.
