New wc Sonoran Gopher

btorgy Jan 28, 2007 04:37 PM

I have a young male wc Sonoran brought in as a rescue. He's very tame so far, never even posing to strike. He looks a little skinny to me, but otherwise healthy. Any good tips on acclimatizing this guy? I really hope to get him on f/t asap.

He's lighter than normal, don't you think?

he does look a little lighter than usual, and his weight looks ok, certainly not unhealthy or worth worry. as far as acclimating, handling him and an enclosure with water, a place to hide, and a warm spot is more than he could ask for.

The pattern is something out of this world especially when combined with the lighter colors.

Good looking snake. On acclimatizing him, I'd just go w/ what's usuually standard for most snakes. Get him in his permanent home, leave him alone for 3 days, offer a small meal, wait 3 more days, offer another meal, wait 3 days and handle again. See how he's eating, keep him quarnatined @ least 30 days, and get a fecal test done before quarantine ends. How big is he? What locale is he from?

He's being quarantined right now, in a tank that should hold him for awhile, on aspen bedding, cork bark hide, large water dish, UTH and overhead light. I think he's about 3 ft long or so, maybe a little longer. He was found around Phoenix area, dug up in a construction site.

Hey Beth. Nice score! That's a great looking Gopher.

I'd give him a full week to get his metabolism going. He was very rudely woken up from brumation, you know? Give him some time to check out his new home, find out where he feels secure, and then go for it.

My WC Sonorans don't take to f/t right away, but sometimes go for f/k with gusto.

Good luck!
