feeding/enclosure questions

imperfectcircle Jan 28, 2007 07:03 PM

how big of a mouse/rat can a snake eat? ive read 2-3 times the size of the largest part of their body. is this true? also, how often should i feed him to make him grow fairly quickly without getting obese? he is between 35-40" as i could not get an exact measurement because hes a wiggler.

and... lol sorry. i turn to these forums for all my questions! you guys and girls always pull through! anyway, how big of an enclosure should he be in if i want him to grow to be 5-6' (feet)? he is in a 29 gallon tank now that measures 30" long, 12" deep and 17" high. will this do? i heard the size of a tank can often affect their growth.

thanks in advance!

feeding weekly is good, 2 times a week can make them grow faster. And cage size really doen't dectate size, but food rather. This is my okeetee corn, atleast that's what the man said at the reptile show i got her from(repticon)

got to photogallery and upload pictures there and next time you can post a pic with no problems(hopefully) you're only allowed up to 3 pics posted per forum reply [if that makes since] but you can have as many as yu can fit into the gallery.

here's what i mean... look up and you should see this.

You should feed a prey item that is about the same girth to 1.5 times the thickest part of the snake. Just keep an eye on it. My first corn became overweight by doing this for the first 3 years. Just pay atention to it's heath.

As far as cage size, a 29 should be good for awhile, but a 40 gallon breeder may be best when it is fully grown. I have heard a 20 long/29 is OK for an adult, but I felt better giving mine a little more room.

For pics, if you use photobucket, just copy the IMG code and you copy and paste as many pics as you want to a post.

ill give it a shot...

IF you can see them... seems to have went down fine! is it normal to see the skin underneath the scales? around where the mouse as settled in its stomach. he's hiding in his hut now which is what he normally does after he eats. moves around for a few minutes then hides for a good while.

phflame Jan 30, 2007 08:58 PM

It is normal to see the skin stretched around where the mouse ends up. Nice looking snake.

all should be well then. now all i have to do is wait and see if he regurgitates... if not, ill keep feeding him this size food.

ill take more pics after he's digested that hefty meal.

thanks for the help!

if your snake is 35-40 inches its already full grown, and size of cage does not affect growth, you have more learning to do
