Witchita wonders.

CollardGuy Aug 10, 2003 04:29 PM

Went to the Witchita MWR today, saw two nice small females, 1 large female, and a beautiful male about 12 or 14 inches with an awesome orange head. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, I was on my way somewhere else to try and catch one. I just about caght a small female, about the same size as Jane. (didn't) But on my way out I spotted an awesome site just outside the boundaries. Will check that out next time I go.

Are you talking Wichita Kansas? I remember trying to catch a really nice male collared lizard in Utah 21 years ago, when I was much faster, and I just really couldn't get close to him. He couldn't lose me, but I couldn't catch him.

Is done more subtely than a lot of chasing. IT's more like sneaky hunting. You have to see them far away, and keep the area locked in you mind. When you get there, they will likely be gone...but you will know they are there at least. Sitting and waiting works good. They will eventually emerge back from hiding.

Noosing works great when lizards immediately spook into close hiding, as does hand capture. the few lizards I caught on my last trip were all caught by hand. I had my noose along, but the lizards were going under cover very quickly. I would life and grap. Keep in mind, this can be dangerous play, since venomous snakes often occupy the same habitat, as do other risks such as bees, hornets, and wasps. I did lift one rock, that was loaded with large wasps. It was luckily still cool enough in the morning under that rock, that they did not disperse.

The noose is essential to have a long...or you can make one, as long as you have some fishing line or what I prefer, dental floss. The waxy floss, can be pinched together to hold a better knot.

Thanks for the tips John, I tried to catch one with a string noose, I accually got it on her neck, too, but she got out, it was pretty windy, and the knot was to tight, so I failed, I also forgot that is best to use floss. By the way, Wichita MWR is short for Witchita Mountain Wildlife Reserve, and no, the female I tried to catch was not within the reserve. As for catching, Me and my brother were trying to scare her towards each other before I got out the noose.
