By 'Albino Soft-Furred' rats, do you guys mean the same trait that is referred to as "rex"?

A buddy of mine has a small breeding set up of rex dumbo rats (with rex and dumbo being separate simply-inherited traits). I think they are all blonde-hooded in color. I know the "rex" trait involves much softer fur, and that is why I was thinking this might be what you were discussing.

Thanks jyohe - I wasn't aware that people were breeding the African rats in more than just a couple of isolated groups yet, let alone anyone finding albinism in them already.

Is the species referred to in general as being "soft-furred" then, or is this "soft-furred" thing another genetic trait that these guys are being selected for?

I personally never had a problem with the old Norway rat.

My rex male has coarse fur... Do your friend's male rats have the soft fur too or is it just their females?

I'm not really sure on that one, but I thought all of his rex rats were soft-furred. He's only got one or maybe two pairs. He sells the baby rats he doesn't need (as pet rats not feeders) to the pet store he is a manager of for the extra odd buck or two - so I usually just see the babies.

Mebbe he's got higher quality rats. Most male rats get coarse guard hairs when they mature so they don't tend to stay particularly soft. They're like velvet when they're babies though!
