Baby RES! Help I think its almost dead!

Agrass Jan 29, 2007 07:34 AM

I've had two baby RES for about 4 months now. One of them has always been pretty active and is eatting very well. The other one was more relaxed but still swam around and ate pretty normally. I've been noticing a change in the more relaxed one though. It hasn't eatten in a few days and this morning i went to go pick it up and it had no reaction to me. I was almost at the point of thinking it was dead when it moved to a different basking point. It wont open its eyes and now every time i put in back on the rock it seems to end up floating in the water. The water is 76 degrees and i have a brand new basking lamp and light bulb. please help!!

I forgot to mention that it cant seem to hold its head up and it is really worrying me

Does it have any symptoms like puffy eyes, mucus around its nostrils, ect? If it cant hold its head above water I would move it to a shallow water enclosure (just enough to cover its back) and make sure the water temp is around 80, while still offering a basking area. Keep the air temp warm also. Place something over the tank to hold the heat in. Maybe a piece of plexi glass with some holes drilled in it... or whatever you can find. Keep offering it food daily. I would also rasie the temp of your original tank a few degrees. Hatchlings are sensative and need warmer surroundings.

Good Luck,
Chris

Take it to a reptile vet. There may not be much anyone can do now but a vet who knows how to treat turtles would be a good idea.
