New shipping problem with Delta????

rainbowsrus Jan 29, 2007 01:36 PM

Just a heads up, I just received a call from Mark Miller (locolizards.com), he's at the Kansas airport and Delta is refusing the package because it has heat packs. The clerk is saying the heat packs are not allowed, that they are a hazardous substance.

First I've ever heard of this, I even dropped off an outgoing package this morning at Delta here in San Jose and they inspected the whole package including the heat packs. A couple of weeks back they almost denied a package because it only had one heat pack but allowed it since it was a direct flight with no connections/stops.

This could be disastrous for our hobby/industry. To have no viable shipping method during cold months.

Will be posting this in the shipping forum as well...

this must be something new or an uneducated/misinformed delta agent. I received my new girl from Mark exactly one month ago and there was no issue at all. hmm....definitely keep us informed.

Seems like an uninformed shipping agent/inspector overstepping thier field of expertise. Iron and salt is the basic makeup of a heat pack. Neither of those are hazardous.

The shipping desk clerk is suffering from "cranial - rectal insertion".

Delta has NOT changed any policy regaurding use of heat packs and they ARE still acceptable for use in Delta Dash shipments.

Every once in awhile you get a new guy or someone that usually works nights and doesn't typically check in AirCargo. Get to know your Delta managers at your airport. If you don't know who they are then ask. I have been shipping Delta for five years and have never had a problem except when a boneheaded employee that has generally not worked there longer than six months gets in the way. International Airports typically have a Hub just for shipping and a shipping manager so get to know him/her if you shipout of an International Airport.

at the Kansas City International (now known as Midwest Continental International) I have been shipping snakes with this facility and recieving animals from this same location for several years now, I know all of the workers there, they know me and yesterday was the first time i've ever been told i couldnt use heat packs. I even had the supervisor calling his supervisor, and his supervisor wants me to bring in MSDS(material safety data sheets) in for the heatpacks before they will allow me to ship with them anymore.

and they are faxing MSDS(material safety data sheets) to the office in Kansas City whom I spoke to again this morning and found out these guidelines are set by FAA, not Delta. Go figure my office would actually enforce the new guidleines....which is to not allow any questionable material until is it ok'd by FAA, they also said they no longer allow dry ice to be shipped in their cargo...how do they keep the lobster cold now?

I hope now that they have the MSDS sheets I can continue to use the Delta Dash service WITH heatpacks. Thankfully the manager has been very helpful and is suppose to be calling me back once he has all the info on the heatpacks.

No dry ice!? What morons, better not let the FAA know that there is CO2 in the air. Dry Ice has an MSDS of 0,0,0 anyway.

With minimal knowledge and the right configuration
Dry Ice is Lethal.
The FAA has a right to be concerned.

I'm sorry, this is rediculous, yeah cause we're puting CO2 powered bombs in our snakes, I mean seriously I hate when rules override common sense. Does this count for just state to state air travel also.

How can the be a hazzard? All they are is rusting metal from what I understand. They are made out of "Iron Dust" when it it exposed to ait they rust causing heat from decomposition.

I least that is what I heard.

Oxidation of rust is pretty much it.

Curious as to what Ivory carpets look like...'don't recall seeing those.

How does everybody advertise that they are "DHL" or "FEDEX Verified Shippers of Live Reptiles?" Both places tell me that they ship absolutely no living organisms, not even feeder insects.
