HatchRite - New Reptile Egg Substrate

PATMAN Jan 29, 2007 02:25 PM

Has anyone tried HatchRite?

It is a new product for hatching eggs and is pre hydrated for easy use. It costs around $15 for a 2 pound bag. I may try it in the future for hatching box turtle eggs.

I always found it odd that they never showed pictures of the actual product on the website or tell you what the ingredients were. From what I have been able to find out about this product from other people, is that it looks to be nothing more than perlite mixed with water crystals and pre-wetted and repackaged. I guess for some people the expensive nature of buying it already mixed and ready to use is worth the convenience or you can buy the stuff separately in larger quantities on your own at a cheaper cost and mix/prepare it yourself.

I doubt I'll be using something like that any time soon. Why bother? It seems overly expensive.

I'm glad you brought this to light, Patrick. I've been wondering about this stuff. We get so many questions on this forum during the warmer months regarding egg incubation. Wouldn't it be great to just say, "Go buy some HatchRite and follow the directions."

The only thing that really concerns me about it is that it claims to be effective for virtually all herps. It isn't stated that clearly, but it's implied. I'm wary of these "cure all" items that claim to be the answer to all of our problems. I know from way too much personal experience that not all herp eggs should be incubated at the same humidity.

We'll have to see what happens when it is "time tested". If it were available back when I was just starting out...I certainly would have given it a try. It was a nightmare trying to find the best medium for egg incubation.

It's sad that they spelled substrates wrong (substraites) on their first banner. Oh well, sometyms I donet speall so gud neether.

Patrick, kudos on your bauri photos making it onto ATP.

good one Ken.
I tend to be wary of people who can't even spell what they sell, besides, vermiculite works just fine for me, why fix whats not broken.
