What constitutes Morelia Amethistina?

EricIvins Jan 29, 2007 05:07 PM

The majority of Bans or legislation I see have Morelia Amethistina listed as one of the large Pythons. Just what constitutes Morelia Amethistina? I know there are very few true Morelia Amethistina in the US and Europe, so what are these guys thinking when they list them? I've yet to see a Barneck or Southern kill a person, or become established anywhere in the US? Thoughts?

Someone went to a book...saw maximum size.....and that was it.

M.amethistina now includes the scrubs known in captivity as Southerns and Barnecks. Aru Scrubs are also currently amethistina. All of these typically reach lengths of 14 feet or less with avg lengths of 11-12 feet and 12-18 lbs. But several years ago, the Aussie Scrub was reclassified as Morelia kinghorni. What's funny is this species is the true giant of the scrubs and really the only scrub species capable of remotely taking a human life. They consistently reach lengths of 15-16 feet and weights of over 50 lbs. Some have been recorded at nearly 20 feet. So once again, the legislators have no clue as to what they are proposing. Ban tobacco, not snakes.
