New Snake Suggestions?

Geckofanatic23 Jan 29, 2007 05:26 PM

Hey everyone, In the next few months I'm looking at adding another snake to my collection. I don't want something really run of the mill and common, or another of a species I already have. the largest tank I can fit is a 40 gallon long. Does anyone know of an interesting and affordable species or two that I can look into? Thanks a bunch!

Buuuuuuuuut, since I already have one, if I had a 40 gallon to fill I'd get a hypo honduran. Sooo orange.....

Nice Spotted. My sentiments exactly. Since you've got a 40 gal., get yourself a (1:1) couple of Childrens Pythons.

The antaresia sound great, I've read about them several times in Reptiles magazine. I'm calling around looking for one or two in the next few weeks. I'm thinking early march I'll get a children's python or two. I'm giving myself plenty of time for extra research and setting up the tank perfect. Once again, thanks! -the Geckofanatic

I'd say get a northern pine, although any of the pituophis would be cool.

I love northern pines, but I didn't think an adult could live in a 40. If so, that would be a great option, because where I want to get my snake breeds great northern pines along with many other species. thanks!

I personally don't have my northern pine yet. I have a 65 gallon slider waiting for him, but it will kind of be overkill until he is at least 5 1/2 feet long. An adult can live in a 40 gallon for a while, but you would need a bigger cage if he gets too big. If you get him young, a 40 should last a good while.

Where are you getting your snake from? I know of multiple breeders who sell northerns(Cherryville, third eye, etc.) but I want as many options as possible.

How much do you want to spend? You can get a rhino ratsnake a male for about I think $400.00 but there REALLY COOL, go to exotics by nature.com they have some.

"Not run-of-the-mill" implies that the snake will be pricey.

But I agree with the others: pituophis and antaresia make fantastic captives, though they aren't rare in the hobby by any means. A 40 gal is fine for any antaresia and for some of the pits like San Diego gophersnakes and perhaps Sonoran gophers.
