Opinions Please

Just looking for opinions of our new addition. We know that it is a spectacled caiman, but our research suggests that there are many subspecies of spectacled caiman. Anyone have any ideas or comments? "Boots" is 38" and came from someone who was not allowed to keep it in their apartment. He was shocked that a woman was interested and not terrified!!! LOL

Definately a spectacled caiman. I have a spectacled caiman myself, and recently identified him as a yacare/jacare spectacled caiman(I've seen it spelled both ways). The thing to look for is blotches along the lower jaw. As babies there's really no distinguishable difference, but as they go through the juvenille stage (yours looks like a juvie) the yacare caiman will have blotches whereas a common spectacled caiman will have a solid color. If you haven't already, check out the following http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/cnhc/csl.html

Based on what I've observed, the yacare spec seems to have more pronounced teeth, but whether this is truthful, and at what age the difference would be noticable I'm not sure.

Hope this helps, Drewsky.
