I think I finally have Ozzy potty trained.........

Iguanamom Aug 10, 2003 05:19 PM

Ok I know this is silly but im so thrilled Ozzy finally started going in his pan that I have filled with water. I have been trying to get him to do this for almost a year now. We recently remodeled his cage, adding some nice big branches and for some reason he has started doing his business in the pan of water. But this gets him one step closer to getting to free roam. Just wanted to brag a little on my Ozzy. Tami

congrats! Now you can borrow my Zephyr for a year and teach him, please? he prefers carpet over linoleum as its softer on his tush i suppose (rolls eyes) (thankfully if i catch it soon i can completely clean the carpet so the parents dont realize, dad threatened to rehome him if he goes =p)and if he goes in the bath, its usually the 2nd or 3rd bath of the day, and sometime he goes twice....

Okay. Now I am intrigued. How does one start this process? I have trained dogs to rabbits to birds where to go, but never an iguana, though I'm willing to try. Is there an age limit to when this can be started? My guy (recently adopted) is already 12 years old. Is there hope?

Well, I can't comment on the age limit part, although Bud was already a year old when I got him, but I did notice before I trained him (and sometimes now, when he doesn't make it to the tub in time) that he has a tendency to go in one or two spots. If you find you can't tub train him, maybe you could put down a square of paper in his usual spot, then change to a container (with some water, maybe?) the same size as the paper.

Although I have to say, it was easier than that for me, because the place he tended to poop was his water bowl. (The other place is his basking spot. I'm not sure if that's laziness, or spite. To train him, I started putting him in the tub of lukewarm, 4-5 inch deep water at 7:30 am and 7:30 pm, and gradually, he adjusted to go when he was in the water, since that's a natural poop inducer for them. He still has accidents though, and becomes completely untrained when I get back from trips longer than one day.
