Snakes on a ... Rome?

reako45 Jan 29, 2007 11:56 PM

Just wondering if anyone saw HBO's "Rome" a couple of weeks ago. I guess the scene was supposed to be where all these ancient Roman gangs were fighting each other over territory, and one group of guys had stuffed a rival in a sack of what were supposed to be venomous snakes. They tore the sack open and the guy was supposed to be being bitten, but the snakes inside were Corn Snakes --- complete w/ evil hissing sound effects. Got a good laugh.

That's nothing new, they're usually corns. You see a lot of ball pythons too, because they're wussies.

lol, i am the exact same way. i get exicting when i see snakes in a movie or t.v. ever seen snakes in a show called fear factor? it pi$$es me off and i can't stand it. one time they had to get all the "white" snakes out of the tank along with others colors of snakes, well they were rough with them thorwing snakes, god! i wanted to punch the tv. they were mostly corns and some kings and milks. along with one albino burmese python. i always dream of being in that show and face the snake and i always wanted to tell the host "what? you call this fear factor? guess what? i keep and breed snakes at home mind if i take them with me?" lol i am sure you all are with me on this one!

STEVES_KIKI Jan 30, 2007 04:56 PM

the last fear factor i saw was one where they had a fish tank with water ad snakes in it...it was probably a 55 gallon. and it was full of corns and garters and i think 1 python. and they had to "bob" for the floating apples. i was just waiting for someone to come up with a snake instead. and another time they had to move these magnets up the side of an aquarium with them inside with a few snakes and mostly geckos and frogs. poor things 1 thing i saw though was they were locked in a body bag full of hissing cockroaches and meal worms and crickets- eww

They have snakes on TV. If the general public only new the truth about snakes, and their behavior, it would make for a VERY boring action movie!!!........like in "Anaconda", this huge 100 ft. man-eater is constantly racing around looking for people to eat!!!LOL. What a farce!!!!...I tell people that even IF the snake could work it's jaws around an adult set of human shoulders,...the entire rest of the movie would consist of the snake coiled up in some brush, unable to move, digesting the massive meal!! for weeks no less!!!!LOL yes, that would make for an exciting "ACTION MOVIE", .....the producer could make a more exciting movie if it was about watching paint dry, or grass growing.......Snake movies are very dificult for me to watch for these reasons. They are just PURE NON-SENSE!!!............Doug

Although they obviously couldn't use the venomous animals with the actor, the practice shown in the scene is an accurate historical torture technique.

The Romans, always on the cutting edge of terror, used to put people in a sack along with some animals (usually big dogs, baboons, and yes...venomous reptiles), and then place the totallity in the water to the point of drowning. The idea was that not only did the person have to suffer drowning (or nearly so), but that they also had to suffer the frantic bites and stuggles of the animals trying not to drown as well.

Awful, but in this case, accurate, I'm afraid.

....the head on the anaconda in that movie.

Years ago I watched a show, on the Discovery Channel if I remember correctly, that was a sort of 'Behind The Scenes of the Making of Anaconda' where they explained how they chose to fabricate the head of the anaconda to look like that of a viper.

Why? As the guy put it, 'the head/face of an anaconda is actually kind of cute and very UN-menacing'. With anaconda's eyes being rather 'bubbly' and set high on top of their head, they DON'T look menacing or threatening. lol

When non-herper friends/family bring up Anaconda I TOO make a point of explaining that the snake would spend the next few MONTHS digesting the meal in hiding and NOT chasing another few people. (I watched about 10 minutes of the movie on TV one night. 10 minutes was as much as I could stand. Awfully bad movie.)

How about the 'Jeep' commercial currently running that has a Bearded Dragon in it? The commercial is set in what looks to be the Western or Southwestern United States. If the commercial's producers are going to select a non-native lizard to have a 'neck-flairing-showdown' with the Jeep, they should go for broke and select a more fitting non-native, Australian lizard, the Frilled Dragon.
