Russ,
...That is what it looks like to me also. I know that people who post all sorts of different items for sale on the internet get these emails. I think the scumbags throw out a VERY large net trying to catch a few fishes. It seems to me that if they were to perfect and refine their methods and learn a little more about the items being advertised they could send out more convincing emails. Their method sending out many times more emails than anyone could intelligently compose must work because that is what they persist in doing. They probably do find a few really stupid victims.

I checked my mail right after reading your post and I have two of these same exact messages in response to two ads I have posted on kingsnake. I agree, very suspicious. The thing that distinguishes this from other suspicious e-mails is that the person's e-mail address has the word "reptiles" in it. Hmmmm... maybe they're catching on.

They are getting better but unless they were to:

A) learn and utilize the english language better
B) customize the email better as a reply about a specific listed item including asking pertinent questions about it

I don't see any of us that have seen the evolution of the scammers attempts being sucked into the game. I do however see noob's as being possible unknowing prey. That's why I always post when they're on yet another phishing expedition.

..I am always tempted to play their game when I get one of these offers. I am 95% sure that the badass that would come to my door to collect would not be as well armed or as accurate as I am. That 5% is just enough for me to ignore these scumbags and let them continue their rediculous scam. I do wonder how many emails they send out for every fish they catch? It is very disappointing that you do not ever hear about law enforcement catching any of them.

Remind me to never show up at your house unannounced.

I too wonder just how far it would go. I for one am not willing to give out my address to those scumbags.

Well I was going to ask what they were phishing for/expecting since I saw no threat but I guess you answered my question.

These morons actually phish for addresses to home invasion? Would love to see them try it with the majority of my relatives. Idiot's would be lucky to be left breathing.

Jeff Clark Jan 30, 2007 09:03 PM

Sean,
...The sting in many of these scams is that they send a counterfeit money order or cashiers check for way more than the purchase price and then have someone come by and pick up the snake and the cash difference before the check or money order does not clear the bank. If the item you have listed for sale is something they can easily resell like jewelry or collectable coins or an expensive watch they just send a bogus money order for the exact amount and have someone pick up the item. I take USPS money order all the time because of my perception that they are pretty safe but I have heard that they are being counterfeited big time recently.

Thanks for posting that Dave.. I probably would have been the idiot who fell for it lol. I didnt know we had people phishing on kingsnake but I guess I should have known nowhere is safe from scammers.

that's exactly why I posted it. For those of us who've been around and had ads for sale this is nothing new, just an evolution of a scam that's been going on for years. IMO, the ones at risk of being scammed are those like you that have not seen it before. Now there's at least one more person that won't fall for those scumbags.... Speaking of scumbags, I have another story to post from yesterday.....stay tuned.
