Frozen Rats

jimmyeo3 Jan 30, 2007 09:18 AM

Anyone know of any places to get frozen rats and mice, in Southern California? It seems like a good idea, but the shipping seems to be more than the feeders. Thanks

Jimmy, I have been buying frozen mice from Rodentpro. The thing to do is buy in bulk or at least fill a box. My last 2 orders have been 98% . The difference in shipping from 1 bag to 10 bags (approx. 550 mice in 3 sizes) was $5.00. $37.00 for the box, the dry ice and the isulation. The wieght seems to play less of roll in the shipping cost. if you do the math $42.00 divided by 550 = about 8 cents per mouse for shipping. I think the total cost, about $205.00 dived by 550 = $.37 per mouse. I havn't found any pet shop selling them that cheap. My last order included 75 weanling rats and I didn't break it down per piece, but the shipping cost was about the same for a full box.

I get mine from LLL reptile - I just pick them up from the store. For mediums it cost me a little over two dollars a rat, which is considerably cheaper than live, most places.

I don't have a place to put the massive amount of rats I'd need to order to make the shipping worthwhile, nor do I have the number of snakes that would eat that much in a reasonable amount of time.

LLL sells them in batches of 15, I believe. If you're near Oceanside or Escondido you can go into the store and place an order.

Anyone from the Bay Area (Cali) know of good places? The Vivarium is close, but its pretty expensive for rats. Truch.

Jenny, where did you get your gerbil? I have a problem feeder ball and am having massive touble with her. Gerbils are illigal in Cali, and am not sure were to get one? (this is what i heard from a lady in petco) Do you thinks hamsters would work as well as gerbils?

j3nnay Jan 30, 2007 06:07 PM

My gerbil was an abandoned pet that a lady just left at our store. He is old and his bottom is balding.

If you're in the San Diego area go up to the Escondido petco and ask for Kevin. He might know how to contact the lady who dropped them (there were 2 others) off, but I'm not sure. She dropped off quite a few illegal furry critters at the store for a while.

Otherwise you might hafta make a trip out of state to get one!

Oh, and hamsters might work too.

If you end up getting a hamster (in order to use one for scenting you'll probably have to) get a "fancy black" male hamster. They're more expensive, but as far as hamsters go, about the sweetest things ever.
When you go to scent, hold the animal with a towel, because they absolutely HATE being used for such things and will squirm and bite.

Just my two cents
