Rarely will you get a good photo when placing an animal in direct sunlight, it's just too harsh. If you filter that light through a translucent white reflector it will soften it a great deal.

Additionally, a very dark or very light background will often fool a camera's metering system into making the exposure either too light or too dark.

Cluody days are ideal for photographing animals outside providing your camera's white balance is set correctly and the auto flash doesn't decide to blow it out.

You may even want to filter your indoor flash shots (fliter the flash that is) through a piece of tissue paper to soften it a bit.

Nice snakes, I like that last MSP the best but they are all nice.
