A Pic for PHRatz

Rouen Jan 30, 2007 07:29 PM

a few posts down you(PHRatz) commented that she wondered if all male turtles had a thick tail like ornates, so heres my male 3-toe, dont mind is toe nails they've been like that since I got him 4-5 years ago, they're slowly over time getting better though.

not a tail pic but it shows his color, that spot on his upper plastron isn't anything to worry about, just a minor nick, again been there since I got him.

Thank you so much for posting that!
I'd read here before that 3 toed males don't have a tail that's quite so obvious as the ornates so then it's not as easy to sex a 3 toed.
Actually that little tail of his does look smaller but you can still see the distance of the vent from the plastron so that should give it away.

These ornates though geeze that tail is large & so are the back legs. When I first took in Chip an email friend of mine who has an Eastern asked me what the heck was going on with those legs of his because they looked so huge to her.
Nothing.. they all look that way around here lol.
Here's the pic that caused her to ask that, it was taken right after he was first repaired by the vet:

Yes they do. I thought that Chip would never have a concave plastron again but to my surprise when the vet took the "cast" off of him in late 2006 I could see that it is still concave.
Lemme see if that shows up in the photo hmmm no not really & now I can't get the photo off this post lol. In this photo you can see pinkish colored plastron where new shell growth has been happening. I thought that was very exciting.

That is really interesting.. I can see a huge diff in the male & female tails of your 3 toed boxies. I guess you have to look at a lot of tails to get it? People I meet who aren't into turtles can't tell a male from a female or one species from another.
I've been really surprised by the number of people who've asked me if the male box turtles can breed with the female sulcata. Uhhhhh
