Sneak attack

You folks might find this amusing, and maybe even have some stories of your own to share.

My ball, who's a little short of a year old, seems to think feeding time is now a game! She eats F/T small rats, and she's always been a super feeder. Every week, never misses.

Well, I feed her in her tank (I can hear the collective gasps in the crowd at that!), but that's just what I've always done. (She's also very tame--no hissing or striking when I take her out.) Anyway, I set the "mood" for dinner by shutting off most of the lights, which usually gets her pretty excited. Lately, she's changed the plan at this point. Instead of just waiting right out there in the open for the rat to drop in, now she shoots into her hide with just her head sticking out. She waits. I drop the rat in and POW! She strikes it and literally pulls it inside. What's funny about this is that she's done this several times now. No other changes to her tank or anything. Same dead rats, same weekly feeding.

I guess it's "Game On" for her!

That's one big advantage to keeping a snake in a glass tank rather than a sterlite. It's really fun to see the patterns of behavior these snakes can have. She's totally a neat display animal for me. In fact, I work from home and keep her tank right next to my desk.

Any one else have some goofy stories to share?

My ball used to eat live. I would put a small plastic container with the mouse inside her tank. She would come out of the hide very excited, jerking her head around. Then while she was going towards the mouse in the tank, her tail would be "wagging", kind of like a dog's, or even a leopard gecko when they get ready to strike. I just always found that interesting to watch.

My big female eats like that now. She actually hit so hard a couple of times that the tank rocked!

There was a boa at the petstore I used to work at that for the longest time would only eat F/T if you held her! She was the biggest of the bunch we had and I discovered her wierd eating preference quite by accident. I was getting pretty frustrated because all the other snakes had taken the F/T mice, and she was looking interested but not striking. So, I gave up, took her out to put her in the box we use for live feeding, and just for the heck of it wiggled the F/T mouse in front of her one last time. WHAM she slammed it and started eating it still coiled around my wrist!
It was pretty cool but definately not something I'd recommend. Scared the bejeezus outta me the first time. After a couple feedings like that she started taking them in the box, thankfully.

Thanks for sharing your story!

i had a wild caught female it was 11 years ago now. but she was almost dead when i got her because she wouldn't eat (i got her started on gerbal's and baby chicken's and) but she would only eat if you put 2 prey item's in the tank. she would kill one right a way not eat it chase the other one around (it was a game to her i swear) for up to 10 min. kill and eat that one then go back and eat the first one.. ( she passed a way 3 years ago pretty sure it was from old age she was about 5.5 lbs when she did)

My biggest girl is a 30 gallon tank with a large terra cotta pot ,So far I can only get her to eat pk mice. She always take four each meal the same way everytime. I open th elid she smells the mouse I then with tongs lower it down the hole on the top of the pot, she nails evertime, after the third one she sticks her head out the opening and I lay the forth one in front of the opening and that she gently take back in the pot. It is funny how if you try to change anything a little bit she will not eat till you do the hole on top of the pot. Shw has me trained.LOl

Thanks for sharing some good stories, everybody!

Snakes may not retrieve balls or talk, but they definitely have some "personality" to them, don't they?

Too bad more non-herp people can't experience this... They might feel a change of heart.
