When to go herping for snakes (in Northern OH)?

Amanda E Aug 10, 2003 06:55 PM

Hi. I'd like to go out and find some snakes, but I've never really been one to find much.

During this season of the year, would I still be best to go out in the early morning, or since it's getting to be the end of the season, should I go out around noon?

I heard once, that during the spring and fall you should go out during 12-2 pm, but during the summer to go out around 9-11 am. Does this hold true?

What temp is ideal for temperate species of snakes? I went out herping today around noon and it was well over 80 degrees F (in the sun), and all I found was a few toads. Should I still be going out early in the morning? I'd particularly like to find some eastern milksnakes.

Thanks for any help you can give to a newbie field herper.

If it is hot during the day where you live, herping should be best in the morning and evening. Generally this is when the snakes will come out to warm up their temps and catch some sun on the roads. When it is cooler outside, anytime will work. Most water and garter snakes can be found 24/7 though. Andy
