I ocassionally get a very fine green/gray mold under my papers. I always hit this with a bleech solution and try to get it out permanently, but it always returns. I keep very humid snake rooms and I feel the high humidity is the culprit. But the tropical species need this. So I'm caught in a paradoxical situation. Now here's my question/s: Do you know if these molds can be harmful and if so, what can they possibly cause? So far as yet I have had NO sicknesses, but I worry about this persistent mold. I asked about this in the burm forum but got no solid answers. You seem like you have textbook knowledge a bit above and beyond the norm so I thought I should run this by you. Can the snakes live amidst this mold with no risk? Or do I need to take drastic measures to erradicate it and perhaps even drop my humidity levels? I keep them between 90 and 99%, though usually closer to 90.
>>If it seems dusty to you, I am sure it is extremely dusty and deletarious to the snakes health (respiratory disease may prevail). Why are you using the litter beneath the newspaper?? If you are looking for a dust-free substrate try 100% aspen bedding or the crushed black walnut types of bedding.....however personally nothing beats newspaper for keeping a cage nice and clean and dust-free (but you do have to clean the newspaper once it is soiled, and completely!). I typically lay down a thick mat of newspaper on the bottom, and then shred up a few pieces on top or lay a few crumpled up pieces on top. Simple, clean, and inexpensive. Cheers.
