He's clogged with uric balls!

tenfield Aug 10, 2003 07:36 PM

One of my bloods hasn't defecated since he arrived 5/29, even though he's eating like a king. Weekly soaks haven't help, nor has a mineral oil enema. For the last two weeks i can actually feel the uric balls- the largest one just north of his vent. Though i've tried to massage them out, i hesitate as the lump approached the vent, as the size of it looks dangerous to push further. Any and all suggestions appreciated...

Mine had that. Palpable lumps and everything. He went to the vet and got x-rayed because I didn't know what they were. The vets just soaked him for 15 minutes and then pushed the balls out. I unfortunately wasn't present for this, I think they had the whole staff holding down my 2 foot blood in the back room :P. But if you're really having trouble, a vet would probably be able to help you get them out without hurting the snake.

bloods do not, i repeat do not, defacate as regularly as other pythons, for their intake their output is nothing. alot of bloods go an average of 2 to 4 months...its how they are, you can try to help them go more often, but honestly, i try not to soak any snakes, its kind of like "lemme rip you out of your home and then pop you in some water and scare the bejesus out of you all at the same time", i wouldnt want it done to me, so i wouldnt do it to them. that said, bloods dont poop often, its sometimes disheartening, but trust me, when they let loose youd think a chihuahua got in their cage somehow. just make sure the snake is well hydrated and in otherwise good health...good luck

If you can actually feel hard balls of urates in the snake, I think that's a bit of a problem. You should have seen my snake's x-ray, he had 4 or 5 visible lumps in there the size of ping-pong balls... I think in the case of my guy this problem started before I got him, so I don't know what causes it.

since im not a vet...yet, i really couldnt tell you what was up with that, but honestly, alot of the time proper hydration does wonders. right now my blood is in shed, she also has a great big chihuahua sized poop on deck, which if the past holds true, will come out about 2 minutes before the last bit of her skin comes off. shes very fond of leaving me a "sausage"...my other snakes do it occassionally, but shes done it almost every time shes shed for me...i guess it makes it a little more convientient...lol

Hey,
Get a large pail or tub and soak that sucker for at least an hour at about 80 degrees water temp (shallow water), and you'll see how that works wonders. You might try massaging it too if it is tractable.
