Should I feed her more?

griffinej5 Feb 02, 2007 05:55 AM

I got a corn a few weeks ago. Since I got her, I've fed her twice. I know it isn't recommended, but I tried feeding her the day I got her (just my best guess that it's a female) since I was told she was due to eat the next day. I left the pinkie in with her for a few hours, and she actually ate it a little before I was about to take it away. Yesterday I took her to school with me and she's now set up on campus as the sort of class pet. I figured I would defrost a mouse and see if she took it, and if not I'd see if my professor or someone else would try the other mouse I left in the freezer in a few days. I was thinking she probably wouldn't eat after having been moved around and all that, but she did. I'm not entirely sure how fast she ate it since I put the mouse in and left her alone for an hour then I went back to check if she ate it after an hour. I had sorta expected I would be asking my professor to remove the mouse before she left if it wasn't eaten, but it was. So, it seems as though she is a pretty good eater. At her widest point she seems to be about as wide as the pinkies I think, so I think she's a bit too small for a fuzzy. I was wondering if maybe I should try two pinkies then, or maybe an extra one on alternating weeks until she's big enough to move up to fuzzies, as I don't want to overfeed her either. Should I just try a fuzzy and see if she can handle it?

I'm a fan of frequent feedings of small food items, rather than giving two pinkies or a fuzzy, especially if the food item's widest part is about the same as the thickest part of the snake. Some of my baby corns I feed as often as every three days, if they are digesting and defecating to keep up with the schedule.

I normally recommend feeding baby snakes every 5 days, and then adjusting that schedule as needed. Although even if your snake was hatched in late Summer, it should be around six months old, and moving up to large pinkies.

If I had her at home I could do that, but she's on campus now, and i'm only there Monday-Thursday. Today i'm at a different campus. I don't think she'd have enough time to digest if I fed her on Monday and again on Thursday, because when I fed her last Saturday, she didn't poop until Tuesday. So, the potential options really only can include bigger food, more food, or just keeping it the same for the time being. I might try to get to the Hamburg show later this month where I can hopefully find more variety in mouse sizes than I can get in the petstores.
