Help breeding Superworms

Black_Wolf Feb 02, 2007 08:40 AM

I've been tring to breed superworms with no success. I get 1 to turn into a bettle, then it dies, then another one into a bettle, dies and goes on like that. One beetle at a time. I can get the regular mealworms to breed, no problem there, now I just have to many of 'em. Finally the bird have come back so I'm slowly feeding the mealworms to them since my lizards don't want 'em cause they too small. does anyone have any advice for breeding Superworms? next time i order some I'm planning on getting like 1,000 - 2,000. (last me like 3-4 months for my beardies)

I sued to let mine grow for sometime after i got them. I kept my on moist peat moss. But not to wet that will drown the eggs. When I was ready to set up a breeding colony.I would take 50 or so worms or more depending on how many you want. I than seperated the worms in a tackle box . I used one I got at Walmart. Each had an air hole and no food or water. They will slowly start to curl up. Any that got straight are dead. After some tiem they will change into the pupae stage. I keep checking them every few days and remove the dead ones. A while later they will change into light brown beetles. Than they will be hungry and thirsty. I set them up like the owrms and they will slowly turn black. I keep them in the same pan for a month or so. Than I move the beetles onto another pan or tub. I found they they eat the eggs. After soem time you will think you see the peat moving. It is those are the tiny baby worms that are crawling around in the substrate. I used carrots, but almost any veggie will do. Change it often. Mold odes a large amount of damage to a colony. Todd
