Large size 50 & 66%ers? Ever wonder?

zefdin Feb 02, 2007 11:02 AM

Does anyone else wonder when they see an ad for an adult size 1500 sometimes over 2000 gram 50% or 66% animals, especially the females, why the person is selling them now?

Maybe I am untrusting by nature, I dont know? But when I see lets say a 1850 gram 66% female Het for Pied. I think that the person bought the snake as a 66%, raised it up and bred it and the babies came out normal and now they are reselling the snake as a 66% still.

If you have a full grown 66%, wouldnt you stand to make more money by just breeding here right now?

I dont get it.

I would have to agree you would figure they would prove them out then get money for a 100% het adult but maybe they already have morphs and 100% and don't really need the possibles anymore. Good ? though makes you wounder.

I've seen like some 02 and 03's , 50-66%ers for sale. You would think in that amount of time they would have bred them a couple of times? I think the same way.

I agree 100% i dont even bother opening these post. Chances are they have been proven as normals. Well at least thats the way i see it. If it is a adult you should most likely know if it is a het by now you know? I am also not a very trusting person but its better safe than out a few grand you know? I am going to be selling some 50% in a year or two and im worried about how hard it will be seeing how im a unknown. I mean i always keep my word and in 23 years of life i have never broken a promise to anyone but how do others that are looking to invest know im not full of crap you know? But i def agree with this it just makes no sence to me.

The best I've seen are animals from a possible het being sold as possible hets....

Example using Clown: 50% het clown male bred to a normal female with the resulting offspring being sold, at a higher price than standard normals, as possible hets themselves. Seems quite unlikely that they would carry the Clown gene.

If I were selling them I'd tell perspective buyers that there is a SLIM/SLIGHT chance of them carrying the Clown gene and charge no more than I would for normals.

But, then again, I'm left wondering if anyone would even bother taking them time to feed/grow up animals from a possible het to use in their clown project. For not much more one could buy definite hets....hmmmm

Ok, So you would think they would prove them out themselves. But how many sucessful breedings(eggs layed, large % hatch rate) with no visual offspring would you give a female before you would consider her not a het?

This is also a good point. It's not that im saying not to trust them im just saying i dont. But like i said im not a very trusting person. They may have breed them and gotten bad clutches. Or may have breed them and she decided she was not going to let her folicals devolope or whatever other situations could go wrong with breeding. Im just saying i dont see why anyone would raise them up themselfs and sell them without getting at least one good clutch out of the deal you know what im saying? I would have to let her have 2-3 good clutches with no visual morphs before i would say normal.

at least 3 clutches but there always is that chance you have bad luck. If I was selling snakes with this hisory I would let everyone know that. You have to admit that for every clutch you get no morph the likelyhood of it being het goes down and the price should reflect that. For me the only way to buy poss. hets is to get them before adulthood. It is also in my nature to over question things but that saves me from being ripped off.

do the math. Three clutches = minimum of three seasons. Plus the two years to raise them up = a minimum of five years. So a '02 female would just this year be at the end of the proving stage. Thats quite a committment for a 50%-66% chance at producing a visual. But even still I would think that if you had invested that kind of time and money in food you would keep the female regardless of genetics. Who couldn't use another proven female?

or two depending on size of clutch and het het or homo het.

revjim_2 Feb 05, 2007 11:32 AM

I recall a thread a few years ago, when experienced breeders were giving their opinions on proving out possible hets. The general consensus was three het x possible het breedings, and two homozygous x possible het attempts. If there are no visible hets by then, most of them would consider the possible het to be normal. Sounds reasonable. Jim
