Not the Typical Mite Question

harperman Feb 02, 2007 03:06 PM

Alright, so after combatting another mite infestation and going to the vet with a Surinam with an RI, I got to thinking...

You know how cats and dogs have those month long treatments that keep them free of fleas and ticks?

Has anyone ever heard of anything similar for reptiles with repect to mites? Maybe even something in a conceptual or design stage? Seems like something that'd make a ton of money in this hobby.

Yeah that might be nice, but for some of the larger collections it might get mighty expensive. All in all mites are not that difficult to controll with the proper husbandry techniques, not to say that you'rs is sub-par just that all it takes is doing one lil thing wrong and you have an outbreak on your hands.

It is called Provent-a-mite. You spray it on a cloth and wipe it on all the openings to your cages. You do it every two weeks. Then you never have those pesky buggers ever again.

......a fogger insecticed with permethrin as the main ingredient since that is what the main ingredient in provent-a-mite is.
Provent a mite is rediculously over priced and over rated. I found a fogger in the pesticed section (of any) big hardware store (like home depot, lows, menards, walmart, etc) called "Black Flag".......kills mosquitos, nats, etc. You want to make sure the main ingredient is Permethrin becuase thats what kills the little buggers. Try to pick a can that only has permethrin or no more than two chemicals. The stuff I use has a .200% conecentration of permethrin and .200% tetramethrin. Im not familiar with the tetramethrin but it doesnt seem to have any negative affect. Provent a mite has .50% permethrin (i think) but the black flag stuff works great. I had a bad infestation last year and the Bladck Flag I used kicked but. It only costs $4-5 and you get way more in a can.

Im only shareing this because Ive used it and it works. I took the risk with my animals and theyre all fine so use with confidance. Just make sure that what youre using really uses Permethrin as the main and little to nothing else. I dont know how other chemicals will affect your animals.

Does the word " INERT" mean anything to you ?
There is so much more to Permethrin and"just killing mites" then I believe you understand.
There is no way to control a "Flea Bomb" once its discharged.
Sadly theres no way to control animal owners either

Very Poor Advise IMO.

I use NIX lice shampoo for humans. Pour the 2 oz bottle of cream rinse into a gallon jug and add water. When i clean cages and lay in the new substrate i wet it down iwth the mixture. Havnt had mites in about 2 years with this trick. If you do see them on the snake you can spray it on their body I wouldnt spray the head down though just because you never know what a chemical might do. Good luck fighting those monsters

Could you imagine mite collars? HA! You could accessorize your snakes. HA! Little pink collars.
