My corn snake won't eat

dalyndz Aug 10, 2003 08:19 PM

My boyfriend had just bought a cornsnake for me and a day or two later i had fed him a pinkie. He had eaten it right away. It's been about a week and a half and he won't eat. I tried feeding him a couple days in a row and he won't go near it. It's like he's afraid of it. He is just a baby cornsnake but i found it weird that he ate the pinkie right away when i got him but now he won't eat. The temprature in his cage is about 82 degrees to about 86 degrees. His living condition is fine too. Does anybody know what i should do? I don't want my little guy to starve to death! Thank you!

I'm having the same problem too. I got my snake 2 weeks ago. It ate the next day. A week passed by and it was feeding time. I got a frozen (pre-killed) pinkie mouse and stuck it in front of the snakes face. It wouldn't touch it like it was blind. It hasn't aten in 19 days now and counting.

Try getting a container that is very dark. Put the snake in there with a live pinkie. Or you can get a pre-killed pinkie and cut a hole on top of the head and squeeze some of the brains out. It increases the scent of the mouse so the snake smells it better. You can buy an anole (lizard) and cut it's tail off so it's bleeding and rub it on the pinkie mouse.

QUESTION: What kind of corn snake is it? Mines an albino. It's a baby.

Thanks for the help. I think I may try putting him in dark box and just prick the frozen pinkie with a safety pin of something. I am NOT sqeeuzing brains out. YUCK! But anyways, I have a problem with something that you said. Buy an anole and cut it's tail off and rub the blood on the pinkie? What the hell is the point of that? So you just make the anole suffer so you can feed a mouse to the snake then throw the anole away? Seems pretty wasteful if ya ask me. By the way my corn is a hypomelonescant(spelling?)

You probably wouldn't have to cut off the anole's tail, just grab it and it'll come off. Anoles drop their tails naturally when threatened. What you do with the lizard after, I have no idea Find a neighborhood kid to give it to if you don't want to kill it. But if I'm going through all the trouble of catching/buying a lizard to scent pinkies with, I'd freeze it. They can be used for many feedings that way (until you can get the snake to eat a plain mouse). I don't think an anole would be necessary if the snake has eaten an unscented pinkie before.

Oh, and they do (unless they discontinued it) have a product called 'Lizard Maker', which is supposed to be like lizard scent in a bottle that you can use for scenting pinkies, but I've heard mixed results with it.

Are you sure it isnt about to shed? My corns will refuse to eat right before they shed. Baby corns will shed 8 or 9 times in a year if they are growing rapidly. I would make sure the humidity level is right, and just wait a few days.
