Ovulating females feeding ? and more....

allexotics101 Feb 02, 2007 07:28 PM

Just was wondering, how many of you have ovulated females still feeding? And how do you get off feed breeding males to feed again so they down burn out and crash. When I have a male like that I just pull him out of breeding until he gains weight again, but that usually means he is out for the season. I know about trying smaller meals, AR's, and seperating males from breeding rooms, but I wanted to see if anyone has some other tricks I dont know about. All responses appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Mine stopped feeding about 2 weeks ago and finally began ovulating today. The other year, when she had eggs, she ate throughout the entire process.. right up until the week before she laid eggs. It was how I found out she was even a female.. the day I found eggs in the cage LOL...those were infertile as she hadn't been with a male so that may be why she ate the entire time. I do seem to remember that while she did eat the whole time, she had reduced the number of rats she would take in a feeding. I would normally give 2-4 small-medium rats and she had cut her amount by roughly half.

Last year we had 2 females that ate up until about 3 days before they laid. This year I have about 5 or 6 females (can't remember exactly right now) that are still feeding that have ovulated and should be laying in a short while. There are some that have had their pre-lay shed as well and still feeding.

I guess I have been lucky with my males as well. I have three breeding males this season and 2 of them are feeding every week even with breeding. I have one male (my Cinna-Granite male) that is only feeding about every 3rd feeding while breeding. I remove my males and place them back into their enclosures and offer every week even if they don't feed. Best of luck on yours animals.
