Nikon D100 Digital SLR Camera

GatorGal May 21, 2003 05:08 AM

Just wondering if anyone uses this camera, opinions would be appreciated and if you have any shots to share, I'd love to see them. This amazing digital SLR uses 6.1 Megapixels and photos are beyond amazing. It has a wide range of options and uses the film SLR camera lenses from what I've read. Definately on the top of my list.

If I had that kind of cash to blow on a camera, I would get it in a heart-beat !

I have an Olympus E10, but it doesn't compare to the Nikon D100. I also have a Nikon N70 with lenses that would fit that camera, so it would be a great choice for me.

Hope you get it!

Best of luck,

Bill Tracy

It is a great camera I'm sure. But it is a 6 Megapixel SLR camera for around $1700. In 3-4 years, if you can find one, it will cost less than half that amount. 12 megapixel cameras are just around the corner (some are already available). Within a couple of years, there will certainly be widely available 20 megapixel cameras (finally digital resolution approaching slide film).

What sucks about this is technology is growing so fast, anything you buy is soon outdated and half the price you paid.

Mind you, if I had $1700 to throw around, I would certainly buy one!

I would love to have that camera. I do have the F100 which is the 35mm film version of that camera and I love it, but I would love to have both of them. I have lots of Nikkor lenses too.

In my opinion, Quality is better then quantity for the most part, but when you are talking about a 6.1 megapixel camera (someone also mentioned a 12 and soon 20 mp cameras), how many photos can you actually take at a time with such a high resolution.

I use an olympus D-520 zoom 2.0 megapixel with a 128mb smartmedia card. At 1600x1200 resolution I can get maybe 80 photos. At that same resolution with 6.1 megapixels I would imagine that it would be 30 photos. Imagine what a 12 or a 20 mp camera would allow you to take, maybe 10 photos before having to switch cards (128mb cards) or upload!

That said, I would defenitly buy one of those cameras in a second if I had the cash, but for now I am happy with my 2.0 megapixel olympus.

If you can afford the Nikon D100, you would just pop in a 4 Gigabyte CF card, and away you'd go!

of my photography. I got the Nikon D100 back in November of 2002 and absolutely love it. I didn't get it for the high megapixels but rather for the large range of different options the camera offers. Before I got the D100, I had the CP5700 and found myself wanting to have the option of using different types of lenses, etc. So I opted for the D100. I have never had anything in the past besides point and shoot cameras (CP950, CP995, CP5700) do I had a lot to learn. I feel that I am just now getting the hang of the D100 and absolutely love it!

I take most of my photos with the D100 using a Nikon Nikkor 105mm Micro Lens which is fantastic for close ups. I also have a Nikon Nikko 20mm wide angle lens but mostly use the Micro lens for reptile shots. Here are some shots I have taken with this camera since I have had it...

Keep in mind that all these pictures have been resized and compressed to make them web friendly. I can have 20 x 30 inch sized prints made from the original photos. I have also not edited these photos in any way and they are as they appear straight out of the camera.

Hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions about the camera and I'll try my best to answer!

OMG wonderful photos, that camera takes amazing shots. Thanks so much for your post! Your photos are exceptional, I love the detail it gives of the scales and the eyes. May I ask what sp those all are?

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. I just purchased a D-100 a few days ago, haven't snapped to many pics yet but I'm looking forward to enjoying it in the VERY near future!
The camera is just packed with features, and as you can see, it takes incredible pics!
For anyone who may be concerned about hi resolution pics and memory, IBM makes a 1G memory card for the D100!
Enjoy, Bill

Lexar makes a 4 Gig CF card that uses MUCH less power than the Microdrive!

Thanks for the info, didn't know that!

Hi,
I’ve bought the D100 a few months ago, never owned an SLR camera before, and bought it especially for the ability to changes lenses.
Most of my photos are in the macro field… currently I own only one lens (Nikon 28-105 with macro option) but I plan of buying the Nikon 200mm micro lens very soon, with some reversing-rings, extension-tubes and bellows, along with the sb29 macro flash.

The camera is grate and you can see more photos at my photo gallery (link below)

That is a great camera. Another one which is less expensive, newer, very similar but better in many ways (IMHO) is the Canon 10D. I finally got my peanuts together and ordered one last Sunday, which should be arriving tomorrow. Cant wait! It's like Christmas for a kid....

Here are some links if you would like to read about these fine pieces of machinery:

Canon

Nikon

For the most part, these cameras will both provide the ability to take excellent pictures. One of the main considerations is if you already have Canon or Nikkor lenses...if so, it seems to be the right move to go with the camera that lets you continue to use your current lenses!

Its an excellent camera! Very user friendly and easy to start off on even if you've never had an SLR (like me). I got mine in December and have already taken over 1000 shots. I use the Nikkor 28-105 lens (macro) almost exclusively, though I recently got a 70-300 that is awesome for long range (but you need a tripod).

The best part is you can get prints from this camera at 300 dpi that rival the best in film photography. Also, like any digital, once you have it on CD you never have to worry about losing quality!

Go to the kingsnake photo gallery and search for vvvddd and you'll see a bunch of shots I just took on a trip from FL up to VA. They're not labelled and all had to be resized and lost a lot of quality, but still. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

I was going to go with nikon. However, when i looked at there film camera lineup Nikons only cameras with the "mirror lockup" feature needed in macro photos was only availble on the f4 an older camer that isnt in prod. at 800$ and the F5 at $2K.

Then i looked at canon there Film lineup offer it in the elan 7 a modest 300$ camera with it. then i bough the d60. i really with i had waited a year and bought the d10 its the same camer basically but it has a far greater ISO setting than both the Nikon D100 and the Canon D60.

I guess its just a personal preferance some say but for those that cant pay the same price for there digi as a film get the canon

oh and the Canon D10 is going for 1500 now.
