? for people who have neonate easterns..

FRoberts Feb 03, 2007 09:18 PM

I have a question which I am asking to gather some information towards some research I am doing. I have had many neonate easterns and have noticed they are nocturnal in behavior. It can not be just mine. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

I have a yearling (sorry not a neonate) but the only time it ever comes out is at night and is then very active.

I am assuming their nocturnal habits are from birth till adulthood. I have seen them in the NJ Pine barrens during the day, but mine seem to hide all day and come out at night, although they will come out from hiding for food during the day. I am assuming the are both diurnal, crepuscular, and nocturnal in habits. I was thinking it would be a slight disadvantage for a neonatal snake to be nocturnal due to the plethora of nocturnal predators (skunks, raccoons, and opossums). So I wish I could study them in the wild and not just in the captive environment. But since such behavior is innate, I do not think this behavior is a product of the captive environment. That's why I am interested in other people personal observations.

Thanks Again

Interesting, my Eastern and my brooksi are both especially diurnal. Especially the brooksi. Crawls around all day, and curls up at night. Of course they have their moments where they're active at night, but mostly diurnal. Same with my two neonates, actually.

That's an interesting observation.I know someone in Va.that claims to see way more easterns on the road at night than in the daytime. Jeff

I work with eastern chains. I have noticed when I go into my snake room, I do tend to see the Lgg roaming around their enclosures at night. But the 2 w/c chains I have were both caught during broad daylight. (just my .02 worth, I have never caught a chain at night, mostly copperheads for me)

I also have an amel and 100% hets. They also roam at night. So I don't know where this fits in.

Mine is out at any time of day or night when she's hungry. Usually she's out and about more when I am in the room as I guess she's hoping I'll give her something to eat.

True, I think for the most part, it has to do with whether they are hungry or fed!! Generally if my snakes are definetly hungry, they will be active!

This may be a difference between nocturnal and diurnal activity. The one I mentioned is a WC.
